Immerse your young pianist in an environment where they learn music in much the same way that they learn language!
Every week your child will drum, dance, sing and chant common melody and rhythm patterns, write music, play music together with friends, play by ear and read music! This is accomplished through a holistic approach to learning where children follow a logical progression to true music literacy which paralells human development. Keyboard Class builds on foundations laid in earlier classes, but your child who has not been in our program will catch on quickly, no worries!
Musikgarten Keyboard classes are based on an aural approach to music literacy. This enables students to begin playing real songs from the very beginning, discovering much of it themselves! Over time, you will see how this aural development will enable your child to hear music in ways that help them comprehend and connect to music easily.
Every week in Sharing Time, your young pianist will play songs they have practiced. They are so exited to play ALL they have learned! Learning to play an instrument always has bumps in the road, but through this approach, you will see joyful music-making on a regular basis, right in your own home!

Ages 7-9
Keyboard Year 2
"Purple Book 3 & Blue Book 4, and, Faber 1"
During Year 2, you will really start to notice elements in your child's music ability that will leave you in awe. Your budding musician will be able to hear chord progressions and begin learning to improvise on them! They will continue to play songs by ear, but reading will rise to a whole new level. Learning to look systematically at a new reading piece, locating the home tone and understanding the key, and easily finding common patterns, decoding the rest is a cinch!
Music Literacy is achieved when students are able to look at a piece of written music and hear in their mind's ear the melody, rhythm, and harmony being represented. In short, Music Literacy is the ability to SEE what you hear and HEAR what you see. This true musicianship is what Musikgarten is all about, and Keyboard Year 2 bears a lot of wonderful fruit!
Your student will continue to joyfully drum and dance, chant and sing, play notation games, improvise their own original melodies at the piano, and read at a whole new level! Weekly Sharing Time now becomes Mini-Musicales, which occur every 4-6 weeks right before Parent Time, so parents can easily attend these mini-performances the children love to share. What an exciting year!

Ages 8-10
Keyboard Year 3
"Orange Book & Faber 2A"
Year 3 is a magical time for your pianist! While they will progress through the Musikgarten Keyboard Book 5 (the orange book), they will also begin their jouney into traditional piano method books. During this year your student will complete 1-2 levels in the Faber Piano Adventures series, and they will do it very easily! Reading through material that is now easy for them, their fluency will increase along with their confidence!
Our carefully designed approach to true music literacy will continue to include reading, writing and improvising music. Your student will still play by ear, and continue their ability to transpose the pieces they play. Patterns and notation games vocabulary continues to extend, and so does their ability to decode new content.

The magical journey continues and expands, with our regular Mini-Musicales every 4-6 weeks and opportunites to play duets and ensemble together as musicians. Such a transformational year!

Keyboard Year 4
"Yellow Book and Faber 2B"
Year 4 wraps up the end of your student's Musikgarten journey while launching your child into a wonderful world of piano possibilities!
During this year your student will complete 1-2 levels in the Faber Piano Adventures series, picking right from where we left off last year. Reading fluency continues to build from the continual momentum of the Faber method. Continued expansion of the skills they developed in Musikgarten Keyboard Book 5 will result in some outstanding experiences in Book 6 (the yellow book).
Our carefully designed approach to true music literacy will continue to include reading, which expands to Classical Piano Literature and a 2-Piano ensemble piece in Book 6. Continued writing and notation game work will branch into more complex reading of notes, sightreading in minor keys, and complex rhythms with 16th notes. The improvisation strand comes to fruition in their own creation of a 12-Bar Blues composition! Your student will still play by ear, and continue their ability to transpose the pieces they play. Watch their creativity take on a personalized expression of their own introductions, codas and accompaniments they add to their keyboard songs.

Mini-Musicales continue every 7 weeks along with opportunites to play duets and ensemble together as musicians. A wonderful culmination of Musikgarten and a smooth transfer to more traditional study!
