Where do Private Lessons Fit In at Harmony Arts?

With so many group classes at Harmony, how do I know when the time is right for Private Lessons?

Keep reading to learn all about our carefully-planned Student Journey designed specifically for the needs of students as they grow. This will be an experience beyond your imagination!

Students can begin music classes here at Harmony as babies! But If your student is entering their journey at an older age, simply find their age below and begin reading there to see what’s in store.  All students are met right where they are, and loved and nurtured from that point. We will prepare them to reach their musical dreams, whatever they might be!

Our Student Journey…

Stage 1: Nourished and Nurtured, 3 months - 3 years.

Your student begins preparing for Private Lessons early by experiencing the Musikgarten program first.  In this nurturing, home-centered environment. Children feel safe expressing ideas while feeling supported as they experience our ingenious Music Learning Sequence. They move, sing, listen, imagine, and learn music with their whole bodies.

Stage 2:  Expressive Explorer, 4 - 6 years.

At this stage, students are immersed in a world of exploration!  They meet all the instrument families, they see music notation for the first time, they try out ideas while ensembling with friends. They suggest ideas and soon, they want to create more and more!

Stage 3:  Confident Creator, 6 - 8 years.

In this stage, students begin playing piano! They find piano easy and fun, because of the preparation that was laid in the early childhood music experience. Now, with that solid foundation, they can tackle the complexities of an instrument confidently, having much to stand on.

Our Musikgarten Keyboard graduates can improvise, play songs in many keys, understand chord progressions and theory, and already have a love of music!  Preparing JOYFULLY for Private Lessons in Musikgarten allows them to develop a true love of music that will carry them through the inevitable challenges that come in later Private Study.  

Stage 4:  Impassioned Individual, 9 - 99 years.

Next in the journey, our students move through our PPC (Private Piano Class) program.  Students can stay in PPC as long as needed, but most cycle through in about 2 years. In this class, students move at their own pace and develop good practice habits. They become much more independent in their practice and learning, and soar through the traditional method books.  They also play in recitals and other performances!  Having transformed into  an excellent learner, the student naturally moves into Private Lessons to learn larger and more complex pieces.  

Stage 5:  Private Lessons, 11 - 99 years.

Private Lessons are the closest collaboration between student and teacher. Just one student, one teacher, for half an hour or more! Private lessons are intended for students who have accomplished much in their piano journey already, and are dedicated to practicing at home 5+ days per week. 

Our Private Piano students:

• Are challenged according to their potential;

• Hone their piano technique through intentionally crafted exercises, catered to their strengths and needs;

• Are able to sight read, perform, play and if they so desire, teach.

Our Private Piano Students can either simply enjoy Private Lessons and accomplish their own personal goals, or, they can join our Mindful Mentors Program.

In Mindful Mentors, our students learn to teach, are given extensive training and supervised teaching experience.  If they desire, they can even teach their own Private Students!
