Cycle of Seasons lays music foundations through perceptual and holistic learning. Main objectives are to build on the child’s growing independence and developing competencies while feeding the imagination.

Cycle of Seasons is a broad-based experience in vocal exploration, rhythm development, instruments, body awareness, finger-plays, storytelling, poetry, creative expression and movement, spatial exploration, singing games, free-dance, and sensory games, all enjoyed through themes involving nature and the seasons. At this age, the nature experience is both intriguing to the child and healthy for development.

WIND DANCERS

SUN CATCHERS

Music Makers at Home explores the sights and sounds of various habitats which serve as the child’s connection to music. Children will also discover many of the different instrument families and specific instruments will be demonstrated by guest musicians. Children will begin to create instrument ensembles, hear specific patterns within the context of a song, and finally read and write their first music notation!! A very exciting year! MUSIC MAKERS AT HOME can be taken for TWO YEARS. The curriculum is the same both years, but I choose to emphasize different components so a child who repeats will be given time to develop without becoming bored.

Music Makers Around the WORLD prepares the child for first year KEYBOARD/PIANO class, and for ANY private lessons, ANY instrument. Children explore a people and their culture through song, dance, and story specific to British, Native American, African-American and German cultures. One goal is to make the connection from ear to page through reading, writing and playing music notation. Drumming and playing Orff instruments such as glockenspiels, resonator bars, tambourines, etc., is included and provides another way to reinforce their pattern vocabulary and work on fine motor skills needed to play piano or drums. This also provides a wonderful opportunity to build ensembles and become more proficient at holding their own part against a class of musicians who may not be playing the same part. Children grow their rhythm and tonal patterns significantly this year, and they are so proud of what they can READ and PLAY!

MUSIC MAKERS WORLD can be taken for TWO YEARS. The curriculum is the same both years, but I choose to emphasize different components so a child who repeats will be given time to develop without becoming bored.

Group Piano (keyboard) classes are based on an aural approach to music literacy. Through playing the piano, singing, dancing, and drumming, children follow a logical progression to true music literacy which builds on foundations laid in earlier classes.

Keyboard class activities can include: singing, dancing, drumming, playing by ear, sight reading, instrument ensemble, rhythm and tonal pattern work, improvisation, writing activities and notation games. Children share songs they can play on a weekly basis…and love it! Note: Adult joins class for 15 minutes, ask your child's teacher for the correct time of Parent Time.

Keyboard Year 2 is an exciting time! By the end of the year, students have been introduced to traditional note-reading, are thinking in several different keys easily (and can transpose many songs to several keys and add chordal accompaniment), and are used to decoding music through their use of their rhythm and tonal pattern vocabulary. In year 2 they begin improvising on the piano, creating their own melodies for common chord progressions.

In this inclusive environment of singing, dancing, drumming, playing by ear, sight reading, instrument ensembles, rhythm and tonal pattern work, improvisation, writing activities and notation games, the student gains confidence as they play for each other. Parents are amazed at what their Keyboard Year 2 student understands (from their own experience) about music. It is truly magical!

In Keyboard Year 3, we do things a little differently. Spreading Musikgarten's Keyboard Book 5 (the orange book) over and throughout the year gives us the flexibility to begin using traditional piano methods. Doing this creates a wonderful bridge from Musikgarten into what will eventually be Private Study.

Encorporating the Faber series and starting at a much easier reading level, gives students the opportunity to move through a lot of reading content very quickly, which builds reading fluency. Getting the best of both approaches rounds out each student, equipping them with tools to succeed at any instrument, in any method.

Faber Piano Adventures, Lesson Book 1-2a

Year 4 is a wondrous year! By the end of the year, we bring our Musikgarten experience to a close. Doing this gradually by spreading Book 6 (the yellow book) throughout the year, gives us the time to really solidify the many concepts we have learned, and solidify traditional counting and note recognition. Bringing it all together in the Musikgarten Way, means that by the close of the year, we have truly achieve Music Literacy - being able to see what is heard and hear what is sung or played. Wow!

Students will continue to progress in their reading fluency using Faber Lesson Book 2a, with some students progressing through Book 2b as well. At this point, these students can easily learn to play Hymns, Disney and Movie Themes! Musikgarten and Faber ensure that each student experiences a wide genre of music, including Classical, Folk and music from different cultures. PPC and PRIVATE LESSONS – Sept-May

Not sure if your PIANO student needs PPC or Private Lessons? See PPC or Private Lessons?

Play piano at your own pace! PPC meets weekly for 1.25 hrs, giving students time to learn their music at their lesson. Feeling empowered, home practice feels much easier and fosters more independence. In this supportive environment, students typically move faster than when enrolled in Private Lessons, because they have more time with the teacher honing practice skills.

This small group of 3-5 students meets together in our Digital Piano Lab, mentoring with two teachers. Content includes extensive micro and macro goal setting, dynamic group activities (which can include drumming, movement, and music-learning games), note-learning contests, music theory, ear training, sight reading and performance pieces. Social benefits are experienced in a group setting, and students feel supported and mentored right from where they are at. Desiring to do their best, this brings out their best!

Motivation occurs when students learn from their own effort. Practicing effectively makes learning easy and playing joyful! See this intro letter for more info: PPC Intro Letter.

DRUM LESSONS lay solid foundations in rhythm and explore percussion instruments and styles. We cover basic percussionist skills using a drum set as well as the djembe and other percussion instruments, focusing FIRST on what foundations are needed by the student. This may mean focusing on a hand drum or djembe until the student is ready for the complexities of a drum set.

We emphasize self-expression and enjoyment of the instrument, with opportunities to write, play, listen, teach, and perform. Drum students develop a strong sense of rhythm, discover confidence to improvise and compose, and improve skills.

Our Drum curriculum has been built on the same Musikgarten principles that have made our program so effective and successful, so you can be sure that your student’s experience will be both fun and enriching!

Not sure if your PIANO student needs PPC or Private Lessons? See PPC or Private Lessons?

Private PIANO Lessons are most successful when the student has been prepared musically, physically, emotionally and intellectually in Musikgarten classes. This is why we recommend you start as early as possible in our Musikgarten classes before tackling the challenges and solitude of private study. This will facilitate piano study in so many ways. However, you're never too old to learn, so we have Private Piano teachers who are great with students of all ages and ability levels.

Lessons are 30-60 minutes in length, one-on-one with the teacher. The following elements are emphasized during the time at the piano: practice skills, technique, sight reading, improvisation, performance, theory, composition, note reading, notation, and musical terms. Students also participate in a 30-minute lab time where they do sight-reading, ear training, and writing activities to further hone their skills and understanding.

Performance masterclasses are held twice a year and replace the private lesson for that week. Recitals are held at least 3 times during the school year, and all students are expected to participate after they have been in lessons for a few months. Additional performance opportunities are also available, local gigs as well as judged events such as National Piano Federation. Fee includes a Premium subscription to Piano Marvel.

FORMAT: Weekly, 30-60-min lesson w/ the teacher

All ages and levels can enjoy a 30-min lesson with a great instructor, learning to play repertoire the STUDENT enjoys.
