This program will meet for an hour each week, which gives students time to learn their music at their lesson. This makes their practice at home feel much easier and helps foster independence in home practice as well. Students will move at their own pace, which means the student will go faster because s/he has more time with me! PPC is a small group of FOUR students who all meet at the same time. However, this is not a competitive environment. Students are encouraged to do their best, which brings out their best. See this intro letter for more info: PPC Intro Letter. Give your student the opportunity to really learn HOW to practice, under a teacher's supervision for a full hour each lesson!

Cycle of Seasons lays music foundations through perceptual and holistic learning. Main objectives are to build on the child’s growing independence and developing competencies while feeding the imagination. A broad-based experience in vocal exploration, rhythm development, instruments, body awareness, finger-plays, storytelling, poetry, creative expression and movement, spatial exploration, singing games, free-dance, and sensory games, all enjoyed through themes involving nature and the seasons. At this age, the nature experience is both intriguing to the child and healthy for development.

Music Makers at Home explores the sights and sounds of various habitats which serve as the child’s connection to music. Children will also discover many of the different instrument families and specific instruments will be demonstrated by guest musicians. Children will begin to create instrument ensembles, hear specific patterns within the context of a song, and finally read and write their first music notation!! A very exciting year!

MUSIC MAKERS AT HOME can be taken for TWO YEARS. The curriculum is the same both years, but I choose to emphasize different components so a child who repeats will be given time to develop without becoming bored.

GET READY FOR Group Drums! In drum class we focus on laying a foundation of solid rhythm skills, preparing your drummer to tackle the complexities of a full drum set in private lessons. We use the African Djembe because of it's fine tone quality, and so that our students can touch and handle and feel rhythm down to their bones! Comprehensive rhythm work in developing a LARGE REPERTOIRE of common rhythm patterns is key to laying this foundation. Correct percussionist postures, exploration of different drums and styles, basic improvisation, with opportunities to share/perform, compose, teach, and play with friends!

Students do not need to own their own drum and can get by drumming on a bucket at home, but we do order African Djembes 2-3 times a year if you are interested in buying one. All drums used in class are hand-made in Africa or Germany from authentic materials and of the highest quality.

DRUM LESSONS lay solid foundations in rhythm and explore percussion instruments and styles. We cover basic percussionist skills using a drum set as well as the djembe and other percussion instruments, focusing FIRST on what foundations are needed by the student. This may mean focusing on a single drum until the student is ready for the complexities of a drum set.

Lab time on an electronic Drum Kit (like a rock band drum set) is included. We emphasize self-expression and enjoyment of the instrument, with opportunities to write, play, listen, teach, and perform. Drum students develop a strong sense of rhythm, discover confidence to improvise and compose, and improve skills.

Our Drum curriculum has been built on the same Musikgarten principles that have made our program so effective and successful, so you can be sure that your student’s experience will be both fun and enriching!

Private PIANO Lessons are for the piano student who has a solid musical foundation to build on, and is ready to focus on developing skills specific to the piano. It is recommended that a student starts as early as possible in Musikgarten classes before tackling the challenges and solitude of private study. This will facillitate piano study in so many ways.

Lessons are one hour long: 30 minutes with the teacher at the piano, and 30 minutes in the music lab doing: music theory, ear training, and sight reading. The following elements are emphasized during the time at the piano: practice skills, technique, sight reading, improvisation, performance, theory, composition, note reading, notation, and musical terms.

Performance masterclasses are held twice a year and replace the private lesson for that week.
